Assignment Name: Source Evaluation with CRAAP

Topic/Unit: Research Skills

 Students will be able to

  • Understand that sources can be evaluated for currency, relevancy, authority, accuracy and purpose
  • Evaluate online sources using the CRAAP test
  • Use Learnics data to better understand your own research skills.

1.  Watch the video to understand how to evaluate sources using the CRAAP test. 

2. Imagine that you are a middle school technology teacher who wants to purchase new Meta Quest Pro headsets for the technology lab in your school.  You need to prepare a proposal asking for permission to buy them.  You know the principal doesn’t have any experience with the metaverse and she may be reluctant to approve the purchase. 

Briefly review the sources below. Spend 1-2 minutes skimming each text.  Then choose two to evaluate using the CRAAP test.

3. Use the CRAAP test to evaluate two sources.  Take notes based on the guiding questions.

Guiding questions

Currency

  • When was information gathered, posted, revised.
  • Is it up-to-date? (links, new info, etc.)

Relevance

  • Does it provide information I need?
  • Who is the intended audience?
  • Can I use it for this task?

Authority

  • Who is the author/publisher/sponsor?
  • What credentials or qualifications do they have?
  • Does url or domain suggest anything?

Accuracy

  • Is the information supported by evidence?
  • Are their citations or references to sources?
  • Can you verify info?
  • Do tone, language, spelling, grammar, etc suggest anything?

Purpose

  • Why does the source exist? (Inform? Persuade? Sell? Entertain?)
  • Is it fact or opinion?
  • Can you identify a bias or perspective?

4.Read the rest of this assignment!  You have work to do after you turn it in!

5. Submit your assignment.  Then open the Learnics App to review your data.

6. Answer the questions in the Post-Assignment Questions section using your data. 

  1. Does your data show that you skimmed each source before you chose two to evaluate?  How do you know?
  2. How long did you spend evaluating each source?  Was one easier to evaluate?  Why?
  3. Review your timeline.  What do you notice about your process as you completed the assignment?  What would you do differently (or the same) next time?
  4. Create a bibliography using the Create Bibliography feature.  Post your bibliography in the Post Assignment questions.
